Candidate Forum: Over 140 citizens attended the August County Commissioner forum. The following Primary Election produced dramatic results with two incumbents being retired from office. Now eight candidates remain, Vince DePalmer, Julia Gouge, Perry Jones, Dean Minnich, George Murphy, Jeannie Nichols, Neil Ridgely and Betty Smith.

Our moderator, John Lopez, will present the candidates with new questions concerning the future of our community and planning issues facing the County. Time will be allowed for questions from the audience.

Please arrive in time for the forum to start promptly and without interruption at 7:00 pm.

Litter Pickup: The next FPAC litter pickup along Rt 91 from Deer Park Rd to MD Rt 140 is scheduled for Saturday, October 12th.  We’ll meet on the parking lot at Finksburg Plaza, near Roy Rogers, at 8 am. We’ll supply safety vests, trash bags and litter pickup sticks – you supply about 2 hours, gloves and an enthusiasm to keep Finksburg beautiful. Contact our volunteer coordinator Maureen Ackerman at the number below for additional information.

Subdivision News:

Lawndale road: The County Planning Commission will consider approving the Preliminary Plans for Brookshire, a 35 lot subdivision on an 86 acre farm located on the Allan Davidson property off Lawndale Rd. near Sandymount Road. Residents wishing to learn more about the development plan or to make comment should attend this meeting, scheduled for October 15th at 10:00 am in room oo3 of the County Office Building.

Finksburg Rezonings: The County Commissioners will deliberate and vote on the Phase II rezonings at a public meeting on October 23rd at 7 pm in the County Office Building. Many of these rezonings are located in the Liberty watershed. The MD Department of Planning has asked the Commissioners to defer any action on the rezonings, allowing the newly elected Board of Commissioners to make the final decisions. Commissioners Dell & Frazier have said they want to proceed with the rezonings regardless of the MDP comments.

Help Wanted: FPAC has immediate need of two volunteers:

Communications Director: This Board membership position is responsible for notifying the Press of FPAC events, arranging press conferences, and monthly authoring of this newsletter.

Banner Representative: Someone is needed to help with articles for the Finksburg Banner and to sell advertising to local merchants. This quarterly newspaper is delivered to every residence in Finksburg and is a source of revenue for our organization.

Contact FPAC President Debbie Ridgely for additional information or to apply.  (410) 239-7840

Council of Governments: Exciting news! The 8 Carroll municipalities are considering the formation of a Carroll County Council of Governments to address the challenges and opportunities of growth in the future. Carroll County government is expected to be a full partner, as are the Board of Education and representative of the public safety sector. When announced at a Maryland Municipal League chapter meeting in Union Bridge last month, the framers of the COG charter included the Finksburg Planning Area Council and Freedom Area Planning Council as members. This could be the long awaited voice in local issues that FPAC has been longing for. We will keep you apprised of the COG as it is expected to develop rapidly once the new Board of Commissioners takes office.
